Yuck...it's back to business for our first grader. This was the first week that she has been sent home with homework. We are actually sort of mystified by it. Whereas last year's homework consisted of a balanced mix of literacy and math, this year's is entirely vocabulary (spelling) and reading. What the heck happened to the other subjects? Anyway, the homework is doable (if not too basic and repetitive) but it just adds stress and a time crunch to an already busy part of our day. One positive part of the homework is that Katie has to read aloud at least one book per evening. She loves to read to Michael and he loves to listen to his big sister, so that works out well. Now if we could just put away the flashcards (blech), repetitive word writing (pffffft), and timed spelling quizzes (yucko), we'd be all set.
